Sights Around Playa
On the tropical vacation front there are lots of folks offering the 'sand to sea' thing but few can add all the to do you get with Playa del Carmen and The Pelicano Inn as your hub. Just look at some of the day trips you can take: right across the channel Cozumel looms and the ferry runs from dawn well into evening; down the road Tulum, the majestic sentinel of the Maya, sits on a spectacular beach. Venture a bit farther and you're in Sian Ka'an, a 1.3 billion acre biosphere, protected home to the area's flora and fauna treasures.
Move inland to Coba, the Mayan commercial center, with its sacbe (an elevated road system), the tallest known pyramid and jungle habitat for the toucan and hundreds of resident and migratory birds. Add to that Xcaret, the eco-archaeological theme park and Xel-ha, the national park reserved for snorkelers.
And, of course, there's always lazing away in your hammock and planning your next trip to the Pelicano Inn!

Area Information
Playa del Carmen is 45 minutes south of Cancun in the midst of the area referred to as the 'Mayan Riviera'. This is a centrally located spot for those interested in world class snorkeling, reef and cave-diving, ruin-hopping, fishing, birdwatching, or golfing. There is also an hourly ferry to the nearby island of Cozumel for those interested in daytripping (hint: mopeds can be rented on the island). Xcaret, a family eco-park, is just down the road from here for snorkeling, swimming with dolphins or horseback riding on the beach.
45 minutes south of Playa, near the archaelogical site of Tulum, is the secluded vacation hotspot, Akumal - 'Place of the Turtles'. Just next door is Xel Ha, an eco-aquarium park. North of there is the resort community of Puerto Aventuras and a dive center. North of Playa del Carmen is the quiet community of Puerto Morelos which also should not be overlooked as a possible vacation destination. There is also an automobile ferry to Cozumel from here.
This area, from Cancun south to Tulum, is also known as the 'Tourist Corridor'. It is commonly reached by plane to Cancun and rental car or bus from there.
The town's pedestrian Walkway is lined with craftshops, boutiques, and a wide range of eating establishments. Some offer a variety of live music with happy hours that seem to be very popular for the visitors.
Playa del Carmen is for relaxing while having fun; but beyond that the island of Cozumel is a quick ferry ride away. The Mayan ruins of Tulum, Xel-Ha (a nautural aquarium), Xcaret (a famous ecological park) and others are easy excursions form here.
