When strolling the colorful 5th Avenue (or as it’s locally known Quinta Avenida) in Playa del Carmen a pretty little white catholic church may have caught your eye…Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen!
We recently had a lot of interest in this church over on our Facebook page, and for a good reason…
It’s beautiful.
The Parish is dedicated and passionate about bringing locals and visitors closer to god through regular services and weddings.
Even if you’re not planning on getting married yet, it’s a must-do on your trip to downtown Playa.

2. Services at Capilla De Nuestra Senora del Carmen
Most people that decide to have their wedding here stumble across this stunning beautiful chapel by accident on their vacations.
To discover if this is the place you’re meant to say “I do”, I highly recommend visiting for a service first if possible.
Mass is held:
Monday to Friday
- 7.00 p.m.
Thursday
- 9:00 am.
Sundays
- 10.00 am in ENGLISH
- 12:00 pm.
- 05:00 p.m.

This way you truly get to enjoy a feel for the place and feel the warm welcome of Fernando Rodrigues Martinez.
On Sundays, mass is at 10 am in English and it is a lovely quiet break from the craziness of 5th avenue.
It’s followed by services in Spanish in the afternoon and evening.
3.Location of Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen
The Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen can be found on 5th Avenue connecting with Avenida Juarez.
If you head for Parque Fundadores, you can’t miss it!
4. History of The Catholic Chapel on 5th Avenue
This stunning catholic church belongs to The Parish of Our Lady of Carmen community and is located in the heart of the Riviera Maya.
It’s the church’s mission to announce the word of god to its visitors.
Capilla de Senora del Carmen is one of the best-known chapels in Playa del Carmen. It’s become a point of reference for both tourists and people living in this beautiful city.
It Was Built in The 1960s By The Founding Families
It was built around the 1960s by the founding families of Playa del Carmen. Maya ruin stones, sand, and seawater were used for its construction.
It’s since been well-maintained and freshly painted.
Inside you will be greeted by music, a beautiful altar that is backed by the window that looks out on to Los Fundadores Park and the iconic Portal Maya – a 50ft. hight arched beachside sculpture depicting men and women in a swirl of water and wind right on the beach.
The chapel and everything inside represents the absolute best of the area.
5. Where to Stay Close By?
So, if you want your wedding here I suppose the next question is where will you and your guests stay?
You’re in luck because I’m about to round up 3 of the areas top offerings.
All of which are all-inclusive, stunning, and not too far (ten min drive max)…so without further ado.
1. The Hilton Playa del Carmen
Adults-Only | Downtown Playa | ★★★★★| All-Inclusive
Formerly ‘The Royal’, The Hilton is the epitome of 5* all-inclusive adults-only luxury.
It is an impeccable resort that sits just footsteps away from the famous 5th Avenue so is perfect for couples who enjoy being in the heart of town rather than outside of it.
We recently stayed at this hotel and decided it would be fun to bring you a video to show you guys around.
Ceremony & Reception Options Include:
- Beach – 200 guests max
- Terrace Overlook – 200 guests max
- Chapel – 60 guests max

2. The Paradisus
Adults-Only + Kid-Friendly | Downtown Playa | ★★★★★| All-Inclusive
The Paradisus offers the best of both worlds for couples and their guests because if you have no children, your guests with children can stay on the same property as you (and visa versa). Attending the wedding ceremony won’t be a problem.
If world-class food, gorgeous decor, incredible service, and endless amenities are a must for your wedding – look no further you found your hotel.
The highlights of this resort for me are the beach and kid’s water park.
It’s one of those hotels that feels secluded but is in fact just 5 mins from downtown.

3. Panama Jack
Kid-Friendly | Downtown Playa | ★★★★★| All-Inclusive
There are two Panama Jacks – one in Cancun and one in Playa del Carmen. In order to avoid the crowds, I highly recommend the one in Playa del Carmen. Plus, it’s the newer of the two.
Situated in a prime location to enjoy all the region’s top amenities. It’s a hotel sure to impress guests of all ages.
I love that the hotel is compact, which is great for parents (if you forget something in the room, it only takes a couple of minutes to retrieve).
It has elevators so if you’re traveling with little ones and strollers this makes life much easier!
The family suites that can accommodate families of 5 and feature bunk beds in addition to a king-size bed for the parents. Win!
Ceremony & Reception Options Include:
- Ballroom – 120 guests max
- North Beach – 100 guests max

What To Do In The Area
The whole reason people choose to visit the Riviera Maya in the first place is there is absolutely no shortage of things to see and do.
Away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun, the Riviera Maya offers a more jungle-esque and nature-inspired experience.
There are so many things to do it’s hard to choose! I’m having a hard time trying to narrow it down. So, I’ll list 3 of my current favorites here, and then underneath you’ll find a link to my post that covers over 20+ of the best things to do here.
1. The Jungle Buggy Tour
Get down and dirty on this awesome mud-slinging jungle buggy adventure!
It’s the perfect combination of “Adventure”, “Fun”, “Culture” and above all “Authenticity”. The idea of our “Buggy Excursion” is to discover the REAL Mexico and what lies behind all mainstream tourist attractions.
Drive your dune buggy through the Mayan jungle, explore off-track paths and Mayan villages.
Stop for a refreshing cenote swim and see a side of Mexico you have never seen before.

2. Xcaret
Xcaret Park is easily one of the top Playa del Carmen attractions for the entire family!
Imagine a zoo in a jungle environment, underground caverns where you can swim and snorkel, a Mayan village where you can see a Shaman perform a ceremony, or visit a coral reef aquarium where you can hold a sea cucumber!
Xcaret is a park the size of 40 football fields that incorporates all the aspects that make Mexico what it is: the nature, the culture, the beauty and the wildlife.
And, the best part is, you don’t follow a tour guide. You choose what interests you most, follow your own schedule and set your own pace.
Save 10% on your tickets when you book in advance and online here.

3. Tulum Ruins, Cenotes, & Turtles
Combine Tulum ruins, snorkeling & cenotes in one magical tour!
Tick off 3 must-do’s in the Riviera Maya!
Explore ancient Mayan Ruins by the sea, swim the colorful reefs making friends with the vibrant marine life and discover incredible caves and underground rivers on the Tulum Full Day Explorer Tour.
First, follow your expert guide through the ancient Mayan city of Tulum and learn all the secrets of this wonderful archeological site. Next head out to the reef to swim and observe the ocean wildlife in their natural habitat! End the day by swimming in a freshwater cenote and exploring mystical caves.
A complete day of discoveries that is sure to be memorable for everyone!
