Comedy Playa
When people think of Playa del Carmen they think of the beach, a cold cocktail, snorkeling and maybe some shopping on 5th Avenue for souvenirs.
What people don’t think of is comedy. But they should.
Comedy in Playa del Carmen
The main comedians involved in Comedy Playa all hail from the US and Canada so the shows are in English. Previously known as Comedy Below Sea Level, these shows are your best source of Standup Comedy in Playa del Carmen. They also invite comedians from other countries as guests every so often.
Comedy Playa just celebrated their 3rd anniversary. This particular night it was the expat locals performing.
The event took place at Lucky Luciano restaurant located on the famous 5th avenue strip. The top floor was dedicated to the event and although the anniversary party was promoted, the turnout was not great.
G Rated? Not so much…
If you are looking for G rated comedy (But, really why would you want to?) Comedy Playa may not the show you will want to see. That being said, there were many laugh out loud moments and the guys are clearly passionate about what they are doing. Each of the 4 comedians has their own style, including Luke whose act includes guitar and a variety of songs.
If you missed that particular show, not to worry, Comedy Playa has weekly shows Wednesdays at 8pm. Head down to 5th for a stroll and then over to Lucky Luciano’s for a laugh.
They also have shows at WahWah’s beach bar and participated in the annual Akumal Comedy Festival. Check out their website for schedules and locations.

Lucky Luciano
On a side note, we didn’t order any food at Lucky Luciano, although everything did look delicious. We did, however, have quite a few drinks. The service was good and the waiters came around often. I LOVE my margaritas and I have to say – they were not great. Just because it is super salty does not make it a margarita. AND they served them in a martini glass (gasp!). Maybe they were trying to be funny to match the show? We are in Mexico, people. Even if you are an Italian restaurant, invest in Margarita glasses. Rant over.
