The last thing you want is to get sick, and even less so when you are on vacation. On top of the discomfort, it can be especially scary when you don’t speak the language and are not in your regular surroundings.
We recommend to always have a basic travel insurance policy and if possible, always call your insurance company before consulting a doctor. They may have specific contracts with certain hospitals and only cover you if you receive services at “their” hospital or clinic.
Most all inclusive resorts in the Mayan Riviera will have a doctor on site or a doctor on call 24 hours. A “normal” fee for consultation will be between $50-100US. If you are staying in a hotel in Playa del Carmen, always ask at reception and chances are, they will be able to refer you to a doctor or send one to your room.
If you decide to go to the hospital, or the doctor recommends for you to go to the hospital, here are some options:
This hospital caters mainly to foreigners and tourists. Most of the medical staff will speak at least a little bit of English, but the hospital has translators available. This hospital is the most expensive option in Playa del Carmen, however, you are seen in a matter of minutes and the care received is top-notch.
A general and cosmetic dentist in Playa del Carmen (U.S.A Licensed Dentist in Mexico). Patients here are a priority. This world-class practice offers quality dental services (state of the art Intraoral Scanners, CAD/CAM Technolgy and a full in-house laboratory) alongside a team of credible specialists (English speaking).
This clinic is recommended if you are looking for a more natural approach to healthcare in Playa del Carmen. They have chiropractic medicine, acupuncture and ozone therapy to name a few. They also have anti- ageing procedures. They just moved to a new local in Plaza Progreso located on the west side of the highway heading south.
The CostaMed hospital has an emergency room but it also staffs various specialists ranging from cardiologists, gynecologists, plastic surgeons and more. The CostaMed facility also offers dental services such as: cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, full and partial implants as well as orthodontics. They are located on the highway heading south, just past Playa del Carmen town in Plaza Progreso.
