Here are our top 5 tips for traveling with kids to the Riviera Maya.
1. Pack Lightly
If you are traveling with infants or toddlers, you may want to avoid paying extra baggage and buy some of the necessary things once here in Mexico.
The bigger hotels in the Mayan Riviera may have the basics in the gift shop, but if you are staying in Playa del Carmen or planning on heading in for shopping, you can pick up most things you will need. In the major supermarkets (Mega, Wal-mart, Soriana & Chedraui) you will be able to find diapers, wipes and food. One thing to note is that we do not necessarily have all the same brands or organic options you are used to at home. Please note that almost all the baby food has extra added sugar.
2. Bring along your Stroller (s)
Many of the all inclusive resorts can be quite large and involve some walking. If you leave the resort and head into Playa del Carmen, 5th avenue is stroller friendly, albeit a little bumpy due to the cobblestones. The streets other than 5th may be a little harder to navigate as the side walks here are not consistent and have random drops in elevation.

3. Not all Tours are Created Equal
If you are planning to explore the surrounding with excursions or tours, some are better for kids than other. The best excursion for kids is Xcaret and the stroller will definitely come in handy there. If you have any questions about excursions for kids, take a look at our list of Fun Things to do with Kids.
4. Bring your Kid’s Life Jackets.
Although bulky in your suitcase, they are light weight and you will feel better knowing that your child’s life vest fits properly. Some tours do have child sized life jackets, but you are never certain of the fit.
5. Consider Car Seats
Car seats are not mandatory for infants or children and will not be provided on airport transfers, although rental is normally available for a fee. Same goes for car rental, if you need child seats, bring your own, or arrange for rental in advance.
